I would say I watch more YouTube than I do regular TV. Now this is aided by the fact that I don't have cable, so when I do watch TV it is through our sometimes questionable antenna, and it usually just for the Oscars. I watch everything on YouTube from vlogs, to sketches, to challenges, to cooking shows, but my time is mostly spent on the beauty gurus. This shouldn't be a surprise, I love anything to do with makeup. I get lots of ideas and inspiration from these YouTube videos, but the most dangerous part is when they start using a product I don't own.
I like to think of myself as a smart shopper. I almost always try to use coupon codes and live in the clearance sections of stores. When it comes to makeup, I spend way too much time searching reviews online and doing my research before I shell out the big bucks for a new product. But every once in a while I hear about a product, and I NEED to have it. If I don't buy it right now, I simply won't be able to go on.
Some of these spontaneous purchases have turned out to be holy grail products, and sometimes I wish I had a time machine to go back in time and stop my self from buying them. Here are all of the products that YouTube made me buy, and what I think of them...
China Glaze Nail Polish - Flip Flop Fantasy
I bought this nail polish purely because beauty vlogger Alison Anderson talked about this non stop a couple of summers ago. It is a great bright neon color that is perfect for summer. I had never tried any polishes from China Glaze before this, but went to the store specifically for this color. Luckily, when I went to the store, they were on sale so I picked up a couple other colors. I absolutely love this neon pinky-orange color, but as far as the formula, I am on the fence. I find that the colors separate in the bottle extremely easily and I am left to shake the bottle for quite a while to mix everything together. I have also found that it chips pretty quickly and therefore doesn't last very long.
MAC Pro Longwear Concealer
This was by far the best impulse buy that has ever resulted from YouTube. This concealer is a must have for anyone! It is extremely high coverage without being too heavy. Although I don't believe the creaseless claims, with some powder it is by far one of the best under-eye concealers I have ever tried.
Hurraw! Lip Balm
This was the true definition of an impulse buy. I randomly found this in line at a grocery store. I had heard Shaaanxo talk about this lip balm a ton on YouTube, but had never seen it in any stores, and didn't necessarily seek it out. I decided to pick a couple up and give them a try. Hurraw! is a lip balm made from organic and vegan ingredients. I chose the grapefruit flavor, because that is one of my favorite scents, and the moon balm. The moon balm seemed interesting because it is a night treatment for your lips, with a calming chamomile and vanilla scent. The moon balm is amazing and really does make your lips super soft, but the grapefruit scent, though delicious, is a pretty basic lip balm. If you are looking for a good vegan lip product, this is perfect, but other than that it is a pretty standard lip balm.
Caudalie Beauty Elixir
This was purchased because of a number of YouTubers raving about this facial spray. It is meant to replenish your skin, tighten pores, smooth your skin, and give you a radiant glow. Now, I did try this a couple times, but I have to say I don't quite know if it does what it claims, mainly because I can't get past the scent. It is made with essential oils and ingredients from plants, which I'm sure is great for the skin, but I think it smells terrible! If you can get past the smell I'm sure it is great, but for me this is a big no.
Smashbox Step-by-Step Contour Stick Trio
Now this purchase wasn't purely because of YouTube. I saw it first on Sephora's website, but I was apprehensive to try them out. I saw a few YouTubers mention them in hauls and without ready many more reviews I placed an order. I have only had these for a couple of weeks, and since a cream contour isn't part of my everyday look, they haven't had too much love. From what I have tried with them, they are amazing! These sticks are extremely pigmented and smooth, and when blended they make a beautiful contour.
NYX Mega Shine Lip Gloss - Beige
This was one of the first YouTube influenced purchases I ever made. I heard Marlena from Makeup Geek talk about this lip gloss quite a while ago. I remember her mentioning that it was strange they would name it 'Beige' because it is so pink. I love the not too sticky formula, and strong pigmentation. It looks great alone or or over a lipstick, and the best part is that it is super affordable!
MAC Mineralize Blush - Warm Soul
Like some of the previous products, Warm Soul has become some what of a cult classic on YouTube. I loved the way it looked in all of the videos I had seen, and I knew I needed to try it for myself. It is the perfect beige-gold shade for a beautiful highlight. It gives a touch of shimmer, without going overboard on the glitter.
Wet n' Wild Eye Shadows
I'm sure in my early days of makeup exploration I tried some Wet n' Wild products, but they were never memorable. I heard a number of YouTubers mention how much they loved the quality, and especially the price, of the Wet n' Wild Eye Shadow palettes. I have a few trios, and one of the 8 shadow palettes. These are incredibly pigmented and smooth eye shadows, and for the price you can't go wrong! Below are my favorite two palettes. The larger one is Comfort Zone, and the trio is Knock On Wood.
Now, I'm sure I could go through my collection and find 50 more products that could be traced back to YouTube videos, but these were the ones that stood out in my mind as the biggest impulse buys.
