Surviving a Sick Day

Nothing is worse than having to look presentable when you are sick.  This past week I battled a pretty severe cold, and although the best remedy for a cold is sleep, lots of water, and plenty of DayQuil, I didn't have the luxury of taking a sick day.  I figured that since I still had to go to work this week, I would take this chance to give a breakdown of my favorite tips and tricks to survive the day when you are sick.

The first think I like to do in the morning when I am sick, is to take a nice hot shower.  The steam helps to open up and clear my lungs, as well as wake me up in the morning.

Once I am out of the shower I used my Origins GinZing Eye Cream.  I apply this under my eyes to brighten, but since eye creams are usually more hydrating, I also apply this around my nose where I usually get red and dry from blowing my nose throughout the day.  I then use Philosophy Hope in a Jar for Dry Skin, over the rest of my face.  This helps keep my skin soft and hydrated though out the day.

I usually keep my morning makeup routine pretty simple, since I would rather use that time to sleep in.  Also, when I'm sick, nothing feels worse than a full face of makeup.

The first thing I use is the L'Oréal Studio Secrets Magic Lumi Light Infusing Primer.  This is my go to primer when I am sick or when my skin is feeling dull.  This gives a perfect healthy glow from within look to the skin, without being too shiny.  I like to pair this with my Garnier BB Cream, this gives enough coverage to hide any redness, but doesn't feel heavy on my skin.  Once my skin is perfected, I like to use a concealer to hide any dark under eye circles, my current favorite is the Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer in Vanilla.  If I feel that I need a bit more brightening under my eyes, I will apply a thin layer of Bare Minerals Stroke of Light in Luminous 2.  This is the perfect shade to help brighten up my face.  To set everything in place, I used the Rimmel Stay Matte Powder in the lightest shade.  This helps to lock my makeup in place with out looking cakey and heavy.

To give my face some dimension, I used my tried and true Urban Decay Naked Flushed palette.  I lightly applied the bronzer to the low parts of my face, applied the blush on the apples of my cheeks, and used the highlighter on the tops of my cheeks.  When I am sick my skin is usually more pale than normal, so this helps to give my skin a healthy glow.

For my eyes I also keep it simple.  I use two eye liners and mascara to help my eyes look more awake and bright.  I apply a shimmery light purple kohl eyeliner across my upper lash line, focusing on the middle of the lid and the inner corner of the eye. A kohl eyeliner is easily blendable, so you can use your finger to blend the color out to make sure there are no harsh lines.  Applying a bright color like this to the middle of the lid and the inner corner makes the eye look bigger and brighter.

Another trick that works for pretty much any eye look, is applying a nude eyeliner to the inner water line.  The inner water line is the thin part between your lower lashes and your eye.  Placing a nude or a white shade here also helps to make the eyes look more open.  I have used the Nars Larger Than Life Eye Liner in Rue Bonaparte because it is very long wearing and does not irritate my eyes.

I also apply a healthy coat of mascara, my current favorite is the Ulta Brand Lash Icon, in the red packaging.  I believe they have discontinued this, but any volumizing and lengthening mascara will work.

For my lips I like to use products that are ultra moisturizing and keep my lips smooth.  The best product I have found to give the lips hydration and color is the IT Cosmetics Vitality Lip Flush in Je Ne Sais Quoi.  It is one of those products that seems to adjust and become the perfect pink lip shade on everyone.  It hydrates my lips without leaving that waxy, sticky feeling that most lip balms leave behind.

Another must have product for me is a moisturizing facial spray.  My favorite is the Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe, Herbs, and Rosewater.  I love this spray not only because it smells amazing, but also because it hydrates and refreshes my face throughout the day, and set my makeup.  I keep a spare bottle of this in my desk at work, for a little mid day pick me up.  Bonus, this spray is only $7!

Keep in mind that the best thing to make yourself feel better, is to relax, catch up on sleep, drink lots of water, and tons of Vitamin C.  But for those days when you don't have a chance to relax, and you need to go to work, school, or just run errands, this look is super easy and simple.
